What's special about Bloglines?

Hello,

Today I’ll start with a brief summary of what I’ve learnt about Bloglines so far. Last week, I learnt how to subscribe to the personal blogs in my group; how to subscribe to any other interesting sites I found during my online searches; how to create playlists.

It was great fun and it was definitely useful. I didn’t know how to create an account on Bloglines; how to subscribe to all of my peers’ personal blogs; how to organize a playlist. These are nice tools to organize information and a good way to organize my work. Due to the fact that in our everyday life we are constantly urged to save time (and money), we need to find what we need - quickly.

The strong point using an aggregator is that each time the sites you subscribed to are updated with new information, you receive the update. Therefore, you’ll save so much time and you’ll receive information quickly. In my opinion, it’s vital to have such a tool because it enables us to tidy up our collection of blogs.

If you want to find more about aggregators, have a look to Using An "Aggregator" To Capture RSS Feeds: A Technology For Keeping Up-To-Date, a very interesting article by Bell Steven. I carefully read through it and I realized that life is easier for those who master technology (I’m clearly experiencing it now in my work!).

Last week, I had a look also to the site of npr, which Sarah suggested us. I had a look at this site because I could find much information on:

  • News

  • Politics and society

  • Business

  • People and places
  • Health and science
  • Books

  • Music

  • Arts and culture

  • Diversions

  • Opinions

In addition, I can also access hourly news summaries and 24-hours programme stream. It’ amazing! It’s a good way to improve my English, to be constantly up-to-date and have fun!

Finally, as you can guess from the title of my post, I want to point out what is special about Bloglines:

  • I can effortlessly blend and monitor the development of my peer’s personal blogs

  • I can add to my personal playlist whatever I like

  • I don’t have to be an expert blogger to find a way to check everything I need without getting lost

  • I can be an active explorer of blogs and save them in new playlists, giving them a title

  • I can learn real-world English by accessing information on the web

  • I can be inspired by fresh and exciting contents I read on the blogs

  • Therefore it’s easy for me to do my work and to save time.

Before leaving, here it is a little piece of wisdom, just for you!

Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself!
(Chinese proverb)

See you!
Martina

Hi Martina!
Here I am reading all the posts about Bloglines, and as usual I tell you what I think about your post!
I really like the way you build up your posts, they're clear, quite short and well written! I also like the fact that you use bullet points in order to make short summaries of your impressions, good choice!
In fact, I must say that the part of your post I like the most is the summary of all the reasons why Bloglines is special! Moreover, I agree with you when you say that "Due to the fact that in our everyday life we are constantly urged to save time (and money), we need to find what we need - quickly". That's exactly what I think, and that's the reason why I liked Bloglines so much!
I didn't know that such a tool existed, did you?
That's great!

However, talking about peer revision, I'd like to suggest you to have a look at a couple of sentences you wrote, because I think there's something wrong in them.

"...and a good way for organize my work."
I think that the preposition "for" cannot be used here, I would have written "...and a good way to organize my work".

"I had a look to this site because I can find much information about..."
Here I think that there's something wrong with reference to both tenses and prepositions.

Well, that's all for the moment!
See you later in the afternoon!

Hi Martina!

I read your post and I think you did a good job! You pointed out all the advantages of using Bloglines, and you organized your considerations in a very clear and schematic way! I agree with you when you say that Bloglines is very useful, since it makes you save time.

I would like to suggest you to have a look to some sentences you wrote, since I think they aren’t completely right.

- “…a good way for organize my work”. Here, as Camilla pointed out, you should have used another preposition. I would have written “a way of …-ing”, rather than “a way for + verb”.

- “We need to find what we need”. I think that here it is preferable to avoid the repetition of the verb “need”; you could write, for example, “you need to find what we want”.

-“Finally, as I pointed out in the title of my post, I want to point out what is special about Bloglines”. Here, I would have avoided the repetition of the verb “to point out”. I suggest you two solutions; the first is to use another verb at the beginning, such as “to notice” (“Finally, as noticed in the title of my post, I want to point out what is special about Bloglines”). The second is to omit the first part of the sentence (“Finally, I want to point out what is special about Bloglines”).

- “I can add to my personal playlist whatever blog I like”. I suggest you to put a plural noun after “whatever”; in my opinion, you should have written: “I can add to my personal playlist whatever blogs I like”.

I enjoyed reading the Chinese proverb! I think that aphorisms and proverbs always say something true! Good job!

That’s all for now. I hope my suggestions will be useful!

Dear Martina,

thank you a lot for your post and your comment too! You’re so nice! Truly, yesterday I felt very nervous and terribly ashamed to speak in front of all our class also because the ‘against’ group was quite good at raising strong objections to our arguments! Anyway, I do apologize for my mistakes!

However, as for your post it is really well-structured: in a list you were able to clearly point out the main advantages of using an aggregator, i.e. Bloglines. In addition, I agree with Camilla! You rightly stressed the fact that time-saving tools are greatly welcomed nowadays when people are always tide-up and have a lot of things to do in the shortest time possible! Thanks to Bloglines you can easily and quickly be updated on the most recent events happening in the world, latest posts sent by your friends in their blogs, news from sites of your interest, and so on…

I enjoyed reading through the article by Steven Bell as well, and I especially appreciated Section Three “Using Blog Directories to Find RSS Feeds in Education and Technology” because I learnt that Bloglines allows you to search feeds that concern a particular subject just by clicking on the ‘Search’ tab>’Search for feeds’ or by typing in the following URL: http://www.bloglines.com/dir. Isn’t it very useful to find several feeds about ‘education’ or ‘language learning’, for example?

Before saying goodbye, a bit of peer-reviewing! Your work was quite correct and consistent; however, I found some oversights:
- a good way OF ORGANIZING/TO ORGANIZE my work (as Camilla and Veronica have already highlighted)
-the sites you subscribed TO
-it enableS us

Hope it helps!

I look forward to reading your comment and don’t forget to review my work, too!!!

A big hug,

Elena

PS: Thanks a lot for the Chinese proverb you put at the end of the post! It’s so true!

Hi Martina!
I read all the different posts of our group and I saw that everyone agrees with the fact that an aggregator is a very useful tool to save time. Yesterday I used it to see if someone had updated his/her blog, and I saw the usefulness of Bloglines again, because I read the new posts just using this aggregator.
I perfectly agree with you when you say that we do not have to be an expert blogger. If I can use it, it means that what you say is true! Fortunately, it is easy to use and it helps us not to get lost in every blog!
Your post is very clear and the use of semi-colons makes the sentences well organized. However, I would like to give you a couple of suggestions:
- When you say "to have a look", the right preposition to use is AT;
- After "A good way" it is better to use the preposition TO, instead of FOR;
- The verb "to learn" in the past is "learnt";
- You forgot to put an S when you said "because it enableS us".

See you at the lab!
Marina

Hi Martina,

I've just read your post and now I'm going to give you my opinion. First of all, I must admit that I really admire the way you write. You use effective expressions and you organize your ideas in a clear way. Above all, I appreciate the fact that you use informal English. Your posts are very easy to read! For example, you included a list making the description of Bloglines less heavy!Even though you posts are quite long they are never boring! Good job!

Our friends have already pointed out some mistakes you made. Don't worry, we all do stupid mistakes! They're simply oversights!

Please, have a look at this sentence:
"Last week, I learned how to subscribe to the personal blogs in my group; to subscribe to any other interesting sites I found during my online searches; to create playlists".

When you start to write a list of things you should use a colon before them. Even though the items are clauses, you should put the colon at the beginning in order to make it clear that you are making a list of things.

See you tomorrow,
Silvia

Hi Marty! Thanks for visiting my blog, although there isn't much up there yet. I've decided to promise myself that I will post more frequently from now on ;) Anyway, sorry I couldn't make it Wednesday night, I was a little tied up with other things, but count me in for the next outing!

Jenny
